JONATHAN WEBSTER, the founder of Efficient Mobile Technicians, was named as Cayman’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2016 on Wednesday evening (16 March) at a glittering ceremony held at the Westin Resort and Spa.

The 29 -year-old West Bay resident who obtained a Certification in Automotive Technology from Wyotech Technical Institute in Sacramento California, beat off strong competition from three other finalists to scoop the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in a contest sponsored by the Sinclair Group. Other sponsors included Shirlaws, Artemis Consultancy, Sotheby’s International Realty as well as prize – sponsor,  Mr. Marshall Levy of Stonecrest Trade and Business Centre, Bodden Town.

Sarah Dobbyn, Managing Partner of Sinclairs and a member of the judging panel, said: “We were really impressed by the number and calibre of the applicants, and it was so hard to pick a winner.  All the contestants had compelling stories to tell, but Jonathan was the complete package.”

Webster said “As a child I dreamt of having my own shop as cars are my true passion”. He hopes Efficient Mobile Technicians will “become a thriving force for service excellence in our country”. The goal of EMT is to appeal to the working class individuals who prefer the convenience of having a mobile qualified technician come to them instead of the hassle associated with dropping their car to a location.

The runner-up was Kimberley Conolly, a 29-year-old Spotts Newlands resident, whose business The Wick Candles & Scents featured natural handcrafted Caymanian inspired scents which Conolly refers to as the Islands Scents Collection.  Conolly’s products are available at the Farmers Market at Camana Bay (Wednesday), the Farmers Market in George Town (Saturday) and at Cayman Spirits Company.

The other two finalists were Brittany Kelly and Xavier Ebanks. Kelly the producer of Strike Twice Creative Ltd, is a production company that specializes in bringing an idea for marketing strategy, social media presence or short film to fruition from inception to final product. Ebanks, co-owner of Awe Tech Group LLC is developing unique software which will give its users the ability book appointments online conveniently.

Sarah Dobbyn said “My business partners/ co-directors in the Sinclair Group and I are enormously grateful for all the opportunities and blessings we have received living and working in Cayman, and we wanted to give something back to the community. We saw the creation of the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award as a way we could pay our gratitude forward.”

“I knew from friends that young Caymanians are often deterred from setting up in business by the high costs involved, and we wanted to give the best and brightest young entrepreneurs a head start.”

“We always knew there were lots of young Caymanians with great business ideas, but my fellow judges and I did not expect to be so inspired by the extraordinary potential that we have seen in the four young Caymanian entrepreneurs who were our finalists both this year as well as last year.

“We looked for three attributes above all: the creativity to make something using only their own ingenuity and hard work, the courage to take risks and beat them, and the passion to change their own lives and the lives of those around them for the better.

“We think it is time that we as a community recognize and reward those whose creativity, courage, and passion create the prosperity on which we all depend.  We know that we have a very worthy winner in JONATHAN WEBSTER, but I want to warmly congratulate all the finalists and salute their future success.”

Independent MLA for Bodden Town,  Mr Alva Suckoo attended the event in place of  judge, Winston Conolly MLA  and spoke of the importance of creating new job opportunities for Caymanians and supporting young Caymanians in creating new businesses.

“I am confident having a diverse knowledge with over 10 years’ experience in the automotive industry has prepared me for the path of new business ownership and development”.

Jonathan was motivated by the birth of his daughter: “in those moments I gained absolute clarity, No matter how hard I worked for another enterprise, I have no equity, capital or ownership. The very next day I started to mastermind the plans for financial freedom”

“After about two years since returning home from University my spark started to die as day to day reality started to take its toll. On August 4 2014 [the birthday of his daughter] the spark hit me like 400 amp magneto and the realization of building my dreams is not just my responsibility but it’s to show my family that dreams can come through if we are willing to ensure the process and actively pursue them with absolute faith”
